Transforming Traffic Through Kappara Junction
This landmark project, fully financed by the European Union, successfully tackled major traffic issues between Mikel Anton Vasalli and Tas Sliema in Kappara. The focal point of this transformation was the construction of a 193-meter bridge with two lanes in each direction. The bridge had a width of 9.95 meters, including two practical lanes of 3.50 meters each. To minimize disruptions to existing traffic, the innovative approach involved separating the lanes in each direction and prefabricating the structure using metallic beams and pre-slabs of reinforced concrete.
A Pioneering Civil Infrastructure
The Kappara Bridge stands as the first of its kind in Malta. Its steel and concrete components were crafted from metallic beams manufactured in Galicia, Spain, and later transported to Malta. The abutments and piles were built, moved, and assembled in just eight nights. The bridge was divided into sixteen sections, each ranging from 23 to 27 meters in length and 6 meters in width. The total weight of all metallic beams reached 520 tons and took two weeks to reach the construction site.
