Project Overview
MED proudly presents the restoration of Sliema's Imperial Hotel, a landmark project that revitalises one of the area's most historic structures. Originally established as a hunting lodge, this iconic building boasts splendid views of Marsamxett Harbour and Spinola Bay. Our focus was on meticulously restoring the historic edifice and reimagining its facilities for elderly residents, in line with the building's original essence.
Change of Use and Historical Significance
The Imperial Hotel, originally a three-star hotel and a significant example of high Victorian architecture from 1865, reflects Malta's British colonial era. It has been a witness to Sliema's evolving history, evident from World War II shrapnel marks on its façade. Transitioning from its original purpose, MED transformed this storied building into a residence for the elderly, requiring a sensitive balance between partial demolition and reconstruction. Our design for the new additions, harmonising with the existing structure, was carefully crafted to maintain the building's architectural heritage while adapting to contemporary needs.
Building Evaluation
The MED team conducted a comprehensive evaluation of the Imperial Hotel, paving the way for a conservation strategy that respected the building's historic significance. Due to a scarcity of historical documentation, our assessment relied heavily on visual inspections, informing our approach to restoring this historic site.
