PROJECT: Reviving a Forgotten
Nuclear Shelter: Transforming Malta's Public Gardens

Project Overview
The Mosta Council has entrusted us with an ambitious conceptual proposal that envisions a revitalized and captivating tourist attraction within one of Malta's largest public gardens. Central to our proposal for the repurposing of the Malta Defence Headquarters, also known as the Nuclear War Shelters, is the transformation of these historical structures into Malta's first Cold War Museum. These shelters were built in 1956 and differ from the more familiar WWII shelters, offering a unique historical perspective.

The Challenge of Dilapidation
These shelters are currently in a dilapidated state, having been abandoned, neglected, and vandalized for years. Access is not a significant issue, as the gates are broken and open to anyone who wishes to enter.

A Room of History
The largest room in the shelters, which used to be the Conference and Situation-Map Room, will be equipped with audio and visual equipment and a seating area for presentations about the history of the shelters. Moreover, as many of the other smaller rooms are not accessible by wheelchair due to narrow doors, this room will serve as an orientation room, ensuring that all visitors, regardless of mobility, receive a wealth of information about these historical sites.

A Space for Exhibitions
Other rooms will be used as exhibition spaces, showcasing information about Cold War Museums in foreign countries and providing insights into Malta's history before, during, and after the Cold War. Visitors will have the opportunity to view protective clothing equipment and caricatures related to the Cold War. The generator room will also serve as an exhibition space, displaying the equipment that was used when the shelters were in operation.

Information and Souvenirs
Inside the shelters, a small information area will offer visitors leaflets and books about the history of the shelters, providing additional context for their visit. Additionally, a souvenir shop will be set up in the room that used to serve as a kitchen, allowing visitors to take home a piece of this unique experience.

This conceptual proposal represents a compelling opportunity to transform these neglected shelters into an educational and immersive Cold War Museum, preserving their historical significance while offering a truly engaging experience for visitors. Confirmation of whether or not this proposal will be realized and built is pending.
