Project Overview
Transforming the iconic former Alhambra cinema, MED proudly presents Zara's expanded retail hub in Malta, now standing as a five-floor architectural wonder. This renovation, overseen by MED in terms of project management, architectural design, and structural engineering, has significantly enlarged Zara's retail footprint, adding about 900 sqm and establishing it as one of Europe's largest retail outlets upon completion in 2018.
Strategic Location and Design
Located on the vibrant Sliema promenade, this retail giant, with a total retail area of 2676 sqm, showcases MED's prowess in creating a harmonious yet functional space. The layout dedicates two floors to women's fashion, one to menswear, another to children's wear, and a distinct area for Zara Home. The additional two floors are efficiently used as storage facilities, reflecting MED's strategic planning and design expertise.
Visionary Expansion
The project's ambition was to redefine the Zara shopping experience, a vision MED brought to life through careful assessment and maximisation of the site's retail potential. This included acquiring airspace from the neighbouring stores and the conversion of the old Alhambra cinema, incorporating it into the new design. The layout was meticulously planned to house diverse fashion sections across the floors, with additional storage space, while ensuring the structure remained unobtrusive from the Ferries viewpoint.
A Hub of Fashion and Functionality
Under MED's guidance, Zara has evolved into a retail cornerstone for PG Holdings, drawing in approximately 15,000 customers weekly. The decision to create a larger, unified outlet, as opposed to multiple smaller ones, was driven by the goal of providing a more extensive and varied shopping experience. This approach, combined with MED's architectural and engineering solutions, has not only maximised the space's utility but also enhanced its aesthetic appeal.
