Project Overview
The Stazzjon Restaurant project, formerly the Museum train station and a Grade 1 listed building, represents MED's commitment to preserving Malta's cultural heritage. This initiative showcased our expertise in structural engineering, architecture, restoration, and interior design, with a contribution from our subsidiary, Mo-De.
Preservation Works
Our team conducted an in-depth examination of the construction methods used during the building's creation, assessing the architectural significance of different construction phases. The restoration encompassed various essential tasks, including rehabilitating the deteriorated masonry fabric, removing cement-based renders and pointing, and eliminating sealants. It also involved stabilising detached masonry facades, cleaning, and reconstructing missing or deteriorated sections of the masonry fabric. The new masonry fabric was homogenised with the existing to enhance the overall visual coherence.
In the restoration of the platform canopy, our efforts focused on removing non-sympathetic additions and repairs that did not align with the historical character of the original structure. Rust removal and cleaning were undertaken to revitalise the canopy and address corrosion issues. We reinstated missing or extensively deteriorated sections, ensuring the preservation of the original design and structural integrity.
