Central to this renovation was the sophisticated structural engineering that realised the project's ambitious vision. The hotel, originally housing 394 rooms, was expanded to accommodate 571 guest rooms through meticulous design and engineering. Notably, the lowest basement level, situated below sea level, posed a significant challenge due to continual water ingress. This issue was innovatively addressed, allowing for the addition of two lightweight floors atop the existing structure. The crowning feature of this transformation is the rooftop infinity pool on the 10th floor. This engineering marvel was achieved by artfully cranking a flat slab along orthogonal directions. A significant structural component, the green side wall, functions as a deep upstand beam, crucial for supporting the pool floor. Any oversight in integrating this wall with the slab could have led to cracking and water infiltration. A Finite Element (FE) model was vital in understanding and ensuring the integrity of this complex structure. This new space includes a bar, restaurant, and entertainment area, offering guests unparalleled views of the Qawra seafront and direct access to a pristine, boat-free beach ideal for swimming.
